John Deere L130 Engine Doesn’t Start

John Deere l130 problems are more despite the splendid job the tractor does. For instance, the tractor may refuse to start when you turn on the ignition key. There are several reasons why this could happen.

There could be a battery issue, or the cylinder could be dry. These problems could occur at the same time or at different times. Either way, you must find a solution to them before the mower can roar back to life.


  • If the battery has an issue, you may consider replacing it. Typically, if the battery is old, it will not deliver enough power to start the machine. In such a case, you will be better off buying a new one. 
  • Check the battery terminals and the power cables to see if they are in good shape. If everything is fine, but the engine does not start, the problem may be elsewhere.
  • Test the cylinders- the best way to test if the cylinders are dry is to remove the spark plug and see if the oil spills out. If the oil does not spill, the cylinders are dry, so you’ll need to spray them with engine oil enhancers or any fuel treatment oil.

John Deere L130 Engine Overheats

John Deere l130 Engine is powerful but can overheat if you overload it. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, overloading may occur if you mow wet or heavy grass.

Secondly, if the air intake is not optimal, due to a clogged screen or poor-quality oil. This could also make the engine overheat.

John Deere L130 Clutch Problems

The clutch is the lifeline of the mower. It enables you to transfer the power to different parts of the tractor when needed. Unfortunately, a worn out PTO clutch may not be able to transfer power. Instead, engaging it blows off the fuse.

Also, as you engage the clutch, the wires wear out. In turn, the naked wire shorts the tractor’s body, blowing off the fuse or the pto switch. As a result, the clutch cannot transfer the power to other parts of the tractor.


  • If the clutch has an issue, disconnect it and unplug the wires
  • Unscrew the bolt to remove the guard and clean the clutch. In addition, check defective connections, repair the wires and mask them using a tape to prevent shorting.
  • Put the clutch in place and screw back the guard
  • Check the switch and replace it if it is blown off
  • Cleaning the clutch and replacing the switch should help you fix the mower. But, if the clutch still experiences problems, you may contact a mechanic.

John Deere L130 Transmission Problem

John Deere l130 problems are many and varied. But the transmission problem is the most serious one. It’s also a common problem with John Deere D130.

The problem reduces the ability of the mower to get up a steep hill. This may happen even when the engine is in very good shape. So, the sooner you find a solution, the better.


  • The only thing you need to do when you experience transmission issues is to check the belt. A slipped or worn drive belt could stop the mower from moving forward. So, fixing it could help solve the problem.

As you continue mowing, you will notice that it becomes more difficult to steer the mower with time. The steering may be too stiff or too loose. Sometimes, you will feel that the turning radius is too short.  All these are signs of issues with the steering.

If the bushes or the pinion gear are worn out, you will likely experience steering challenges. The worn-out gears make the steering experience excessive friction, making it difficult to steer the tractor. Thus, changing the sector plate, pinion and bushing may solve the steering problem.

Issues with the transaxle constitute rear-end problems. Typically, the transaxle consists of transmission and ancillary systems. This system is located between the back wheels. So after months of usage, the transaxle weakens and inhibits the flow of transmission fluids. It results in rear-end problems that you must fix.


  • Check if there are sticks and debris stuck in the transaxle. If present, remove them to solve the problem.
  • On the other hand, if the mower experiences a sudden loss of drive, it indicates that the drive pulley is stripped out. In such a scenario, you will need to buy another pulley.
  • If the above solutions do not solve the rear-end problem, you may need to reassemble the hydrostatic transaxle. Reassembling the transaxle may be difficult if you have no expertise. So, the option you have is to buy a new system. Alternatively, you may buy a transaxle upgrade kit, which may still serve the purpose.

The carburetor is an essential component at the top or side of the tractor. It mixes the oil and air in the required ratio to allow combustion. If the carburetor is faulty or dirty, it inhibits combustion and makes the engine choke off.


  • The first thing you’ll need to do is to clean the fuel tank and the carburetor. Start by unscrewing the nuts that hold the carburetor and the engine. Use a piece of cloth or a rug to remove dirt on any build-up in the carburetor. You may then use an additive to clean it.
  • Blow air in the carburetor to remove any remaining dirt.
  • Check if oil filters and fuel lines are clogged. If they are, ensure to clean them and replace the defective fuel pump. 
  • Replace the filter and reconnect it to the oil line.

The Engine Runs, But the Tractor Does Not Move

There could be several issues if the mower does not move when the engine is running. They range from locked parking brakes to bypass levers to loose mower blades. Other causes may include incorrect blade balance and too little or too much oil.


  • The first thing you’ll need to do is to check and unlock the parking brake. If it still doesn’t move, disengage the bypass valve lever to see if it gives the mower a forward thrust.
  • Check and fasten the mower blades or balance them. You may also consider replacing the blades if they are overused and worn out.
  • If the oil is too little, add more.

The Mower Vibrates Too Much

After months of using the tractor to mow the compound, the vibration may become too much. This may be as a result of a damaged belt or worn-out pulley. Also, if the belt and the pulley are out of cantering, it may cause vibration.


  • Start by removing the clogging from the sheaves or mower deck to stop the vibration. Also, consider replacing the worn-out components, balance the blades, and checking the canter.
